Erectile dysfunction (ED) occurs when a man has consistent and repeated problems sustaining an erection. Causes include medications, chronic illnesses, poor blood flow to the penis, drinking too much alcohol, or being too tired. The percentage of complete ED increases from five to 15 percent as age increases from 40 to 70 years.

Without treatment, ED can make sexual intercourse difficult. The problem is reported by 1 in 5 men and that number increases with age. Men with ED often have a healthy libido, yet the body fails to respond. In most cases, there is a physical basis for the problem.

Symptoms of ED include:

• Erections that are too soft for sexual intercourse.

• Erections that are too brief for sexual intercourse.

• An inability to achieve erections.

Once we have the problem diagnosed at its core, we will take all the steps needed to help alleviate the cause of your ED. This could mean prescribing lifestyle changes like more exercise, a better diet, or quitting smoking. Or we may see if oral medications may be the best treatment.
